Art Classes
Starting Art
..has morphed since it's first conception..now more like...'started and now serious about art'.. I set up this facility for adults in 2007. Some of these early students being still with the group, with their art vastly progressing. Initially we covered specific areas such as lino cuts, claywork, plasterwork, as well as the staple subjects being still life, life drawing and art history.
Now, entering 2010 students will continue with the staples, but be more focused on their own creative direction. There will of course still be the opportunity to explore different techniques ie printing or clay work. I will endeavor to guide students through their practice with one on one on-going tutorials. I try to stimulate and challenge, encouraging students to push themselves in directions not normally taken. I believe that a good artist is never finished learning, should always be pushing boundaries, carry enough confidence to 'fly' artistically but also to ' train their eyes ' look critically without inhibiting the 'flow' of production. I encourage students to experiment and not necessarily strive for finished 'on the wall ' works all the time. it is the process itself that holds the intrinsic value and without it the conclusion would remain hollow, without quality, amateur.
Based at Devonport Community House,in the upstairs art room, students can take the whole morning to indulge their creative urges. It is a large room with lots of natural light, fans, heaters and well equipped with easels, and specialist safe storage for works in progress. Some paper is provided free as are morning tea/coffee and biscuits. We have two life models sessions each term (cost included)
Friday - 9.30am - 12.30am $330.
about me:- I graduated in 1987 from Bath Academy of Art U.K. with an honours degree in Fine Art. I have worked as a gallery manager, foundry worker, sculptor's apprentice and tutor. I am a professional local artist working with bronze fabricated sculpture, printing and painting. I have studied various creative techniques over the years and have a keen interest in all aspects of the arts.

PO Box 32371, Devonport, Northshore, 0624.
Once you have enrolled, it will be beneficial to do a bit of preparation. If you can get to the library, go to the art section and have a browse, also have a good look around, photocopy anything of particular interest to you, it may be something like space exploration or botany for example.
Your A4 sketch book will act as a kind of visual diary, therefore you should try to keep it with you as much as possible. Enter into it anything you are drawn to: an old bus ticket, article in a paper, old photo etc. Try sketching things around you, people, bottles, coffee mug etc. Don't be concerned with finishing things off, if it is getting frustrating, just stop, try a different angle. Make notes on ideas, other artists that you like (not just visual).
Take photos:- Use whatever camera you have. The subject matter is up to you...could be buildings, clouds, people, flowers...whatever catches your eye. These will be a useful resource for your future projects.
